I suspect someone will have to pay or there will be a burial abroad. The cost of the hospital fees could come out of her estate if she has a house to dispose of or other assets....If all else fails, you could have a cremation in Greece and just bring the ashes home...don't mean to be heartless but it would be cheaper....thats why we need insurance...but too late now.

I had a relative who died in simillar circumstances. She was on holiday here (Scotland) from Norway. Sadly, the least inexpensive way to get around this was for a relative to come and represent the family at her funeral. She was then cremated and the ashes taken back to Norway. I know it's harsh but you might consider looking at the costs for similar. Sorry to hear about your loss. God bless.

Try and bear up under the sorrow this is causing.May I suggest that provided it is not against your religious beliefs you consider cremation in Greece and return her ashes to the UK.

I`m not sure that the question should be "will she be allowed home?" because it`s a matter for the family to sort out.I think you mean, `will they send her home or will I have to pay to get her sent home.`I don`t think anyone in Greece will pay her passage, but, then again, what will they do with her if they don`t pay, and you cannot afford it.You can try to get a loan to cover the cost of 15000 whatever that is, or a friend may be able to help out, or you could have a whip-round the family and raise the money that way.The British Government may or may not help, but at least you can try. Also, contact your bank and explain the problem.Does your aunt have any property or goods to sell to help towards cost?Contact the British Consul in Greece, or at home, and ask them, it will not be the first time they have heard of this problem.Good luck.

Many (if not all) airlines give highly reduced rates for funeral flights (for the body and for those travelling with it). Ask about those. Also, contact your aunt's health insurance and find out how to transfer her coverage and/or see if she had life insurance.

I was sorry to read this sad news. You must get some advice and would suggest the British Embassy in Athens. Here are the details:Contact Us1 Ploutarchou Street,106 75 Athens,GreeceTel: +30 210 7272 600consular.athens@fco.gov.uk08.30 – 13.00 Monday – Fridaytelephone enquiries: 08.00 – 15.00 Monday - FridayIt is VITALLY important to take out insurance when travelling overseas. Explain to the Consulate that you have managed to raise some money through the family and can they assist you in any way. You might want to talk to your bank in the UK to see if they could give you a loan. I am sure under the circumstance they will be sympathetic. But I have to echo the advice you have been given and perhaps consider a cremation in Greece to get your relative home.I hope it all works out for you.

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. There is unfortunately no-one who will pay for your relative to be flown back to the UK - I think you should take the advice of people here and have a funeral in Greece, and then bring the ashes back to the UK.This is a lesson to everyone who thinks they will get away with travelling without travel insurance.

It may be a wiser decision to bury her over in Greece. This might be the information you need -> http://www.britishembassy.gov.uk/servlet/Front?pagename=OpenMarket/Xcelerate/ShowPage&c=Page&cid=1140683979497Sorry for your loss. :-(
