Hi I have the life, accident and health license in New York City , I would like to know how I market and get business. I don't have experience in marketing , but I do have 5 years of experience in health insurance auditing. Some advise please! I would like to be an independent insurance agent or broker.

With out having to pay for advertising at first it can be tricky. Your best bet is to get a couple thousand business cards made, the more the cheaper. Make sure your card reads your contact information as well as what you can offer. LIFE, HEALTH Insurance, etc. Now, make it your goal to get rid of ALL of your business cards. Keep them with you at all times and hand them everyone you come in contact with through your daily routine. And hand them 5 at a time saying something like "you or someone you know can benefit from my services at some point". Make great warm friendly impressions with these people. If they don't know who to go to when it comes to what you have to offer, they will now. And if you help them, they'll be glad to refer you to the people they know. And when I say hand them to everyone I mean everyone. Have NO shame and do NOT discriminate. Remember, what you are selling will HELP people. If they don't think they need life insurance, then they are doing a great disservice to themselves. Or they just don't need it because they own enough assets to be self insured. Just focus on helping people, and the money will be there

I have been an agent for over 23 years. Last May, I went into business for myself. I started from scratch - I had no clients and no income. I "pounded the pavement" going to businesses (I focus on group health) and got some renewal dates from some of them. I made a file with the x-dates, and contact the prospective client 2 months before their policy renews to get the info from them for quoting. After one year, I am doing very well. In fact, I just purchased my dream car as a toy. If you are committed to succeed, and will work very hard, you can do very well in this business. However, it is not easy, and you really need thick skin.Good luck!
